The Last Will of Johann Anton Schaffgotsch from 1733
“It is under this foundation that the Kynast estate and the quite expansive library in Hermsdorf, including all of the gathered weaponry, works of art, medallions (save for those that are to be inherited by my descendants, as specified on separate pages), artifacts, and other rarities shall remain where they stand and the executives specified in my Will shall prepare thorough records of the collection (were they not provided by me in my later writings), and keep them safe, away from any dangers related to wars etc., and will not allow the removal of any of these assets.”
It was by this document that the count secured the Schaffgotsch family collection from being dispersed and, subsequently, set the course for its expansion and protection. This was the beginning of museology in the Valley of Jelenia Góra.
